Padre Island Natl Seashore (NPS). Daily entrance fee (annual avail), free w/ S/A Pass. 4 areas for RVs. 14-day limit thruout entire park, after which at least 48 hours out, then may return for more 14-day periods until 56 day annual limit is reached. Go E from town on S Padre Island Dr (SR-358), continue across bay on J.F. Kennedy Causeway, bear R, continue ~12 mi on Park Rd 22 to fee sta: N27.47383 W097.28525. Visitor Ctr: N27.425 W 097.29927. Main ocean shore with salt spray, wind blowing sand from the dunes behind, occasional smog. Cell service minimal everywhere. 1) Malaquite CG. 42 sites (6 tent only). $14, S/A Pass 1/2. Follow signs from turn off park rd at N27.4311 W097.30072. Designated primitive sites, tables w/ sunshields. Trash, restrooms (hot W)/showers (cold W). Central W & D (at N27.43099 W097.29729) free to anyone in park. CG is behind 1st set of dunes; most sites have ocean view over the dunes. Heavily used in winter, noisy (barking dogs, generators all day, but quiet hrs observed). Ext antenna & amp needed for ATT & Verizon. PHOTO. Barbara Walling Dec 91. 2) Bird Island Basin. 34 designated pull-in/back-in 50’x15′ pkg spaces. Chem toilets. $8, S/A Pass 1/2, or $10 annual pass. Same fee for day use or O/N. Along Laguna Madre (Intracoastal Waterway). 3) South Beach. Follow park rd to the S, past Bird Island and Malaquite, until pavement ends at beach, TR onto beach at N27.41164 W097.30305, up to 60 mi driveable w/ 4WD, camp anywhere you think you can (can get stuck in deep sand!). Free camping permit required, avail at Visitor Ctr. Park recommends 4WD after 1st 5 mi (after 1st 0.5 mi better). Any RVs incl motorhomes can do the first 0.5 mi, but do not try to tow a car on the sand; unhook first and walk back for it; besides, no place to turn around without backing. PHOTO. 4) North Beach. Just N of park entry station is a turnoff to the beach rd which goes N to Corpus Christi and Port Aransas. 1st mi of this rd is in the Natl Seashore and subject to its camping rules. 27.47741 N 97.27402 W. On hard packed sand. Free camping permit required, avail at Visitor Ctr. Beyond that is the area described in the Port Aransas listing. 2WD driveable but not for motorhomes. PHOTO. 361-949-8068. Packery Channel BD. Several covered tables, trash cans. Police patrol, may allow only one night. No permit needed. Go E from town on S Padre Island Dr (SR-358), continue across bay on J.F. Kennedy Causeway, TL on SR-361, go 0.8 mi, TR on Zahn Rd, turn towards Packery Channel Boat Ramp, TL bypassing pkg lot, go to end of rd, all paved. 27.61628 -97.20709. Jerry L Dixon #136086 Feb 24.
