(Prince of Wales Is) Notes: This 4th largest island in the US, located off the Alaska mainland, is slightly larger than the state of Delaware and is all NF except the few sm towns. Vehicle access is via Interisland Ferry Authority daily ferry to Hollis from Ketchikan (not the Alaska Marine Hwy System). Prince of Wales visitor guide avail free on ferry, & NF MVUMs (4 cover entire island, free at ranger stations in Craig & Thorne Bay). Most rds have FR numbers, but the numbers posted roadside do not always match the maps. Paved rds are the Craig-Klawock-Hollis Hwy, Big Salt Lake Rd, Thorne Bay Rd, & N Prince of Wales Rd (becomes gravel after Whale Pass rd jct). Brian & Kitty Benzar #108579 Jun 15.

(Prince of Wales Is) BD sites on Island. Facilities minimal, vary. Free. 14-day limit. All paved rds have frequent lg pullouts w/ no restrictive signs, NF rules allow pkg w/in 100′ of rd unless posted otherwise. Some especially nice BD sites are 1) Harris Riv Interpretive Trail, lg gravel pkg area. From ferry terminal TL, go 8.4 mi, TL at MM 22.6. Do not turn at 1st sign for Harris Riv Trail, turn at 2nd one. Short gravel rd to pkg area. No facilities. Surrounded by forest, shady. 0.5-mi loop trail.
2) Beaver Falls Trail, pkg area. From ferry terminal TL, go 23.7 mi, TR at MM 7.3 on Boundary Rd (becomes Big Salt Lake Rd). At Control Lake Junction (MM 16.9) continue straight on N Prince of Wales Rd (map shows as Rd 20, but signed as FR-43). Go 45.5 mi (becomes gravel) to MM 100.6, TR into pkg area. Toilet, trash bin. Raised boardwalk 1-mi interpretive trail thru fascinating limestone cave landscape to waterfall that disappears into a cave.
3) Labouchere Bay, very lg level dirt/gravel area. Follow directions to #2, but continue straight another 32.1 mi to end of gravel rd (short spur continues R, but very rough). Beautiful oceanfront BD pkg. No facilities.
4) Twelve Mile Arm, lg level gravel pkg area. From ferry terminal TL, go 10.5 mi, TL at MM 20.5 toward Hydaburg. Go 12.5 mi, TL at well-signed turn to Twelve Mile Arm & Polk Inlet. Go 9 mi (very narrow winding rd), follow signs to Twelve Mile Arm. On oceanfront. No facilities.

(Prince of Wales Is) Harris River CG (NF). 14 sites, tables, fire rings. W, toilets, trash bins. $8, S/A Pass 1/2. 14-day limit. From ferry terminal TL, go 11.3 mi, TL at MM 19.7 at CG sign. Sm sites, tight curves. Appears to be very lightly used as grass & bushes are growing in many sites. Interpretive trail. Brian & Kitty Benzar #108579 viewed Jun 15.
