Salton Sea SRA. 6 CGs w/ BD & hookup sites. The SRA begins ~12 mi SE of Mecca on SR-111, SW side of rd, along Salton Sea, & extends 14 mi further SE to Bombay Beach (closed CG). 5 CGs are in the 7 mi closest to Mecca, starting w/ Headquarters, New Camp & Mecca Beach – all $20 BD, $30 hookups (lower ~May 16-Sep 14), $2 less for persons 62+. Then come Corvina Beach & Salt Creek Beach (PHOTO)- both BD only (portajohns, W, trash), $10 and $2 less for persons 62+. Free cold showers at Corvina Beach & warm at Mecca Beach. Only Headquarters CG has a D. All have portajohns or restrooms, most have tables. May 15: Water has receded ~100 yards from campsites, dead fish in new beach area. Box Canyon Rd (BLM). Miles of BD spots. No facilities. Free. 14-day limit. Go E on 66th Ave (becomes Box Canyon Rd). Plenty of pkg at jct w/ Painted Canyon Rd, across on S side or 200 yds in on Box Canyon Rd & turn N on old pavement. Other spots further in. Mecca Hills Wilderness, among the mud hills. Painted Canyon Rd (BLM). BD spots. Posted as 14 day limit. Go E on 66th Ave (becomes Box Canyon Rd), after crossing canal TL (N) on Painted Canyon Rd (heavily washboarded). Site for sm-med rig at Surprise Canyon, 1.6 mi in. Other sites further down rd (last mile has some soft areas). Lots of good hiking, especially at end of rd. Lg turnaround at end of rd.
