NOTES – Not reported as O/N locations. 1) Getting to Prescott: N From Congress/Wickenburg: ~20 mi N on SR-89 (5.5 mi up grade 5-6%, but great views) to N34 22.148 W112 39), TL on CR-10 (Kirkland Jct/Bagdad) to Skull Valley, continue to Prescott, becomes Iron Springs Rd. Note: SR-89 N beyond Kirkland Jct, rigs over 40′ prohibited, many slow curves/grades. Via Skull Valley is scenic, faster, easier drive. S from I-40 x146: very good 2 lane (SR-89). Iron Springs Rd, BD CGs & dispersed sites (NF). In town, from jct Sheldon St/SR-89 & N Montezuma/3rd St, go N on Montezuma (becomes Iron Springs Rd/CR-10, paved).
1) MM 3, TR (N) at brown sign for Granite Basin Lake (N34 34.721 W112 31.476) on Granite Basin Rd/FR-374, go ~2 mi on paved rd to turnoff (N34 36.148 W112 32.32) for Yavapai CG, entrance on L (W). 21 paved sites. Tables, firerings, some BBQs. Central potable W, 2 recirculating composting toilets, dumpster. $18, S/A Pass 1/2. 14-day limit. Open all yr. Narrow paved loop rd w/ sharp curves, check ahead. 40′ posted RV limit, recommend 32′. 5860′ elev. Scrub oak, semi-arid area. Trails & sm lake just N (camping fee tag good for day-use). 2) At 6.7 mi on Iron Springs Rd, turn N at signed entrance (N34 35.130 W112 33.666) on gravel rd to Alto Pit OHV Area. 11 sites, tables, fire rings. 3 vault toilets. $14, S/A Pass 1/2. 14-day limit. Interior rds very rough. 40′ rig fits a few sites. Ponderosa Pine forest, sm mtns, scenic views. 6200′ elev. OHV for under 50″ vehicles, includes cycles & bikes, hiking. 3) At 10 mi, go N (N34 35.913 W112 36.376) on Contreras Rd to free dispersed sites. 0.3 mi to 1st site (N34 36.124 W112 36.469), continue past multiple sites (N34 36.174 W112 36.442, N34 36.191 W112 36.366, N34 36.225 W112 36.420 – nice trees, N34 36.574 W112 36.513 until 0.8 mi. 4) At 15 mi, go N on Tonto Rd (FR-66, former 102), at N34 33.923 W112 40.036, to free dispersed sites, 4800′ elev. ~400′ to 1st site, R into sm turnaround site (may be State Trust Land, see AZ Note). Good Verizon, no internet further N). 2nd site, 3 mi N of hwy on Tonto Rd, just N former ranger sta (sign “No Camping within 1/4 mi of water hole”), at N34 36.179 W112 40.187 TR, not a great location, sm rigs only. 3rd site, at 5.5 mi, to trail 9407S (N34 37.872 W112 39.107), shaded area on L, multiple sites. 4th site, at 6.6 mi (N34 38.912 W112 38.968) ~0.7 mi past U-Bar-U ranch rd, TL, both open & shaded sites. Then 1/4 mi further N is FR-41, floods after any rain, sm rigs only, many more sites. Coming from Skull Valley, Tonto Rd is 8.5 mi N of Skull Valley (town), Contreras Rd is 5 more mi, Alto Pit 3+ more, Granite Basin Rd 2.2 more. Debbie & Stan Van Kleeck #13751 Jun 12. Lynx Lake Rec Area (NF), 2 CGs: Hilltop, 18 sites. Lynx, 39 sites. BD. Tables, grills. Central W. Vault toilets. $18, S/A Pass 1/2. $8 reservation fee. 7 day limit. ~4 mi E of town at jct SR-69 & Walker Rd (N34 32.902 W112 23.995), go S on Walker Rd. 2.4 mi to Lynx CG (N34 31.053 W112 23.469) or 3.3 mi to Hilltop CG (N34 30.382 W112 23.201). Rd paved to & inside CGs. ~40′ max rig. Lynx is all-reservations in summer, Hilltop has some nonreservable. ~5650′ elev. Pueblo ruins, gold panning, trails, rent boats, swim, fish. From Prescott, jct Sheldon St & Montezuma (where SR-89 turns S) go 3 mi S (1/4 mi after Prescott NF sign), TL (E) at sign, N34 30.336 W112 28.692. Paved interior rds (some end in loop too sm for lg rigs). Site size varies, a few for 40′ rig. No room to park sm vehicle outside site. Quiet area. Prescott Basin Dispersed Sites (NF). The Prescott Basin area is immed S, E & W of Prescott, ~59,000 acres (~4% of the Prescott NF). Camping allowed only in sites designated by brown vertical fiberglass posts w/ “DISPERSED CAMPSITE” decals. Each site has a place to park, fire ring, & area for a tent, no other facilities. Campfires allowed only in fire rings in designated sites. Free. 7 day limit w/in 30 (outside Prescott Basin it is 14 day w/in 30). Elev ~6700′. Access rds & sites all rough, check ahead w/ sm vehicle. Area rds & # of sites along each: FR-373/Thumb Butte Rd (steep, narrow, curvy, paved, N34 32.625 W112 32.877), 21 sites (lg rig OK: sites 1-8, 15-17, 20). FR-51/Pott’s Creek Rd, 4. CR-64/Copper Basin Rd, 7. FR-64/Marapai Rd, 7. CR-101/Wolf Creek Rd, 12. FR-707/Pipeline Rd, 5. FR-80/Sundance Rd, 6. CR-56/Senator Hwy, 7. FR-79/Trittle Mtn Rd, 16.
