American Electric Power (AEP) has free BD CGs in their “ReCreation Land” area of reclaimed coal fields. Tables, firewood, W, pit toilets. Campsites not well-delineated – some gravel, many grass. Lg range of size, levelness, shade. A few sites OK for lg rigs. Free lifetime permit required, obtainable at local stores, Ohio Division of Wildlife, AEP (PO Box 328, McConnelsville, OH 43756 or call 740-962-1208), or at Miner’s Memorial Park info ctr (N39.6989 W81.73037). Permit (fill it out yourself!), maps, other info: tinyurl.com/nevhhc . 3 wk limit at any one CG. Miner’s Memorial Park is 4.6 mi W of Reinersville on SR-78, just W of jct w/ SR-83. They replanted 63 million trees, established 350 lakes/ponds, & built nearly 380 campsites. Horse & bike trails. Fishing & hunting with state licenses. Cell service poor thru much of area. CGs are both named and designated by letters. 2 of the 7 CGs: I-70 x154 or 155 at Zanesville, go S to Main St/US-40, go E to 9th St, go S, go 19 mi E on SR-146 to Cumberland, go S ~7 mi on SR-83, 1) Go SE on good unpaved rd ~1/2 mi to Sawmill Rd (CG “D”). N39.73647 W81.68975. Grassy sites along stream. Sm-med rigs. Turnaround no problem.
2) Or, go ~3 mi further S on SR-83 to Hook Lake (CG “A”, right at hwy). N39.72816 W81.70812. On a lake (fishing for under age 16). Sm sites along lake. 3) The other 5 CGs, by GPS only: Woodgrove (CG “H”) Along a creek. Open area at entrance & a few sites might handle a lg rig. Walk area past host sites 1st. Very sm turnaround at end. No Verizon. 39 43.225 -81 40.373.
Sand Hollow (CG “C”). Along a lake. Most site very unlevel. Sm rigs only. N39.73703 W81.73266.
Windy Hill (CG “E”). Grassy area on top of a hill No actual rd, more like a picnic area but is next to maint bldg w/ a gravel lot that could work for O/N. 39 45.016 -81 40.956.
Maple Grove (CG “G”). A few sm sites, tight turnaround. 39 42.431 -81.43.524.
