Poor Verizon. No ATT. Elev 6600′. PHOTO. Or. go L at split, several wooded lg-rig-OK sites along creek, 1st at 1.1 mi, also beyond but rd becomes high clearance. No turnaround; must back/unhook. Or, go straight at split 0.3 mi to “USFS (gravel) Stockpile” on L, nice open area, ample space, can park so you don’t see hill of gravel. Pullouts along Salmon Riv (NF), SR-75, ~31 mi E from Stanley to USFS boundary (~8 mi W of Clayton). Most of this stretch is signed on both ends “Camping in Designated Sites Only”. 1) Just E of Stanley & before designated-zone, ~MM 192, S side, lg BD area along riv. OK for lg rigs. 2) There are very few such designated sites, 1 is at MM 204, N side. Lg rig can park in pullout in front of site. Barbara Koonce Jul 95. Custer City area, BD (NF). Free. 16-day limit? ~12 mi NE of Stanley on SR-75 (~41 mi SW of Challis), near MM 203, just W of bridge across Yankee Fork, turn N on paved Yankee Fork Rd (“Sunbeam Village” sign). Turn is across from lg historical site for Sunbeam Dam (pit toilet/lg pkg area, no signs prohibit O/N). Paved rd goes ~3.1 mi past 3 fee CGs, then becomes a wide, well graded, gravel rd, ~6.5 mi further to “Custer City Ghost Town”. Numerous BD sites, both sides, along this section, some creek side, some multiple rig sites. Turnaround at N end of Custer City. After Custer City, rd becomes narrow gravel not recommended for lg RVs, tho many make it to Custer #1 CG (NF), ~2 mi (pit toilet/tables/fire ring, 6 sites, free, turnaround at end of main CG rd). Scout 1st before taking RV in. Custer city is a restored ghost town w/ self-guided walking tour. Area was heavily mined. N of rd that goes to Redfish Lake, next to Sunny Gulch NF fee camp, on S side. Smooth rd around loop, areas to R (S) OK for sm-med rigs. Lg rigs use lg pullout opposite toilet to check out a site 1st. Some tight turns, boulders. There are a few other riv accesses off SR-75 near rd to Redfish Lake, many have sign w/ picture of tent & “10 day limit” in middle, fit only 4X4 or tents. Barbara Koonce July 95. Alturas Lake Area, Sawtooth NRA. 3 NF CGs along N shore: Smokey Bear, North Shore & Inlet. W spigots, pit toilets. All $15, S/A Pass 1/2. 10-day limit. ~20 mi S of Stanley on SR-75 to MM 169.4 (Alturas Lake turnoff, sm sign), turn W on paved FR-205. Smokey Bear has 11 sites, boat ramp.
